General Pediatrics
Pediatrics is the medical branch that provides health and medical care for children, infants, and adolescents, from newborns up to 18 years of age. Pediatrics is a relatively new medical specialty focused entirely on child health.
What Does a Pediatrician Do?
A pediatrician is a doctor who provides medical care to children suffering from any health issues. A pediatrician also monitors the mental and physical development of children. They diagnose and treat various disorders, including infections, injuries, cancers, organ infections, genetic conditions, and congenital problems.
Pediatricians are also involved in the early detection, prevention, and management of issues such as behavioral problems, functional disabilities, social difficulties, and mental health concerns like stress and depression.
When To See a Pediatrician?
If your child experiences fever, vomiting, diarrhea, a cold, or other infections, you must consult a pediatrician. You should also visit a pediatrician if your child shows symptoms such as difficulty walking, constant stomach pain, blood in urine, seizures, or a frequent need to urinate.
What Are the Subspecialties of Pediatrics?
The subspecialties of pediatrics include child abuse pediatricians, pediatric oncologists, pediatric cardiologists, pediatric pulmonologists, pediatric rheumatologists, adolescent medicine specialists, critical care pediatricians, developmental-behavioral specialists, neonatal-perinatal pediatricians, pediatric gastroenterologists, pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric nephrologists, and pediatric neurologists.
